Mare and Foal in Need

On Mar 27, 2009, CMK took in a mare who was at death's door. Most people who saw her didn't think she'd survive. Mama taped at 585lbs with a body score of 1, had all her hair rotting off, was anemic, & was bagging in preparation to foaling. She was also showing classic signs of Placentitis. By the first of May Mama hit the weight tape at 861lbs & was still holding on to her foal. May 6th came & Mama brought a beautiful filly into the world. It was a difficult birth with complications. Today Mama tapes at 782lbs (post foaling weight), so she's gained 200lbs. Unfortunately the road is still long, she needs another 200lbs & is still on antibiotics. If there are any angels out there, Mama & Filly could sure use some help.

  1. For those out there who would be willing to assist a private rescue I would like you to consider cmkdreams. CMK has recently acquired a pregnant mare w/a body score of 1, weighing in at 585lbs (weight tape). 5 weeks later the mare was taped again she weighed in at 861lbs, still needing another 200lbs. Mare has foaled w/complications. CMK is sacrificing & struggling to provide support & care for mare & foal. She could really use some help if anyone is interested in donating to help the mare & foal. If anyone feels hesitant to donate cash, feed items would be greatly appreciated. Beet pulp, Calf Manna, alfalfa and/or grassy alfalfa, alfalfa cubes/pellets, Mare & Foal grain. If you have further questions I am sure the CMK would gladly answer them.

  2. Gosh...what a wonderful, thoughtful thing to do Dark. I'm almost speechless. Thank you.

Can I also publically say thank you to the friend who supplied a biosponge product for Mama & who has done some hand holding through all this? I couldn't do it without you. Also thanks to my wonderful hoof lady who dropped off minerals that I'm sure have not only brightened up Mama's poor coat, but given her a great start on regaining her health. I truly appreciate all you do. And to the friend who is always there whether we're laughing or crying or you're just coming over to check out Filly's swollen & blistery vulva, you always brighten my day. Thanks from the bottom of our hearts, CMK Mama & Filly

  5. Thank you so much MotherMare. What you've already sent is going a long way in helping keep a devistating infection at bay. Plus the little extra put good yummies in the feeder.

  6. Would like to help. How can I send money or something. My email rockin60Qhorses@aol.com. Also a suggestion. Flax seed ground up added to her diet should help with her weight and her coat and hooves. I have used it with malnutrition horses very successfuly. Best of luck.

  11. Good to see you yesterday RanchDog. Thanks for stopping by & helping with the evening chores.

Thanks so much Tired. The girls & I appreciate it. Wish I'd been home when you made the drop. You need to see the little one the next time you're over my way. Her hinny looks a lot less scarey than it did the day she was born. :) And if I can believe my eyes, Mama looks a little better too.

  12. Rockin, thanks for emailing with Dark. She'll let you know details. I agree, flax is wonderful. Mama has been getting 1 cup/day since she arrived. She's also getting beet pulp, Calf Manna, Rice Bran, free choice grass hay & 3 flakes alfalfa per day, as well as a special mineral supplement. She's been on antibiotics almost the entire time as well. First for placentitis & now for the retained placenta. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for the wishes of good luck.

  13. CMK sounds like you have everything covered. Baby looks pretty good for mom being so malnutritioned. Maybe instead of beet pulp some all-in-one. It has more calories. And when baby starts nibbling it is better and easier for her to chew. DArk sent me the paypal info so I will get you some $$$ tomorrow.

  14. Wow, I had no idea people could post comments under every update. Guess I spend too much time in the barn & not on the computer. LOL Thanks Rockin, I'll have to ask about the all-in-one. Filly shouldn't be eating the beet pulp but since she's just lip smacking for now, it's ok. All-in-One could be a better option once she's really eating. Maybe add it with some Calf Manna.

  15. I have a colt now and he eats all-in-one with stable mix pellets and Source Micronutrients. I did add ground flax but I think he doesn't like it. Selinium and Vit E injection is good thing. You should even give it to the mare. Would probably help her out.

  16. Mare has had her injection. Sounds like we're on the same page for a number of things. :) Just got off the phone & was told to give the filly another 1/2cc tonight.

    How old's your colt?

  17. He is a month old. And being responsible breeder I am keeping the colt. The mare belongs to my daughter. He also had a problem with his hind legs. He was such a big colt that we had to help him out. His pasterns were very weak but with his Sel/vitE he was good within a week.

  18. I have another call into the vet to discuss coming out for tetracycline injections. I LOVE the babies but this one has about done me in. She's such a cutie that she breaks my heart. Glad your little guy has come around.
